Wind Window (Quick Primer)
The wind window is the 180° arc downwind of you. 12 o’clock is zenith (overhead). Power builds in the center and at speed through the lower edges. For snow kiting:
- Practice controlled figure-8s in the center window at low power.
- Avoid deep power dives near ground/ice obstacles.
- Keep board/skis edged to manage power and maintain upwind angles.
Safety Checklist
- Ice safety: Aim for ≥4–6 in (10–15 cm) of clear, new ice for a single rider. Avoid inlets/outlets, pressure ridges, and areas with current.
- Quick-release systems: Verify both primary and leash releases. Practice muscle memory.
- Weather: Check steady wind, temp, and gust spread. Avoid extreme gusts or rapidly warming temps.
- PPE: Helmet, eye protection, layered cold-weather gear, wrist/impact protection, and ice picks.
- Buddy/comm plan: Never go alone; share exact launch/return times.
